Puppy Plunge Returns for Poolside Play in Columbus

Dog emerges from Pawnee Plunge in Columbus NE with ball in mouth at the annual Puppy Plunge

When summer heat reaches its peak, there’s nothing quite like a cool, refreshing dip in the pool. But why should humans have all the fun? On Sunday, August 25th, the second annual Puppy Plunge at Pawnee Plunge Water Park is giving our best friends the chance to make a splash! With weekend temperatures anticipated to reach the high 90s, the City of Columbus couldn’t have chosen a better time to let the pups make a splash!

A Tail-Wagging Tradition for Columbus Dog Lovers

Last year’s Puppy Plunge saw over 100 excited pups diving, splashing, and paddling through the pool, proving that this event is a must for any dog-loving family. This year, the City of Columbus is ready to do it all over again, inviting dogs of all shapes and sizes to enjoy a day dedicated to them. With separate swim times for small and large dogs, the Puppy Plunge event at the Pawnee Plunge Water Park is designed to ensure a safe and fun experience for everyone.

  • Small Dogs (up to 25 lbs):
    • 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
  • Large Dogs (over 25 lbs):
    • 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

This thoughtful scheduling ensures that every dog, from the tiniest Chihuahua to the most majestic Great Dane, can enjoy their time in the water without feeling overwhelmed.

Splashing for a Cause at the Puppy Plunge

Not only is the Puppy Plunge in Columbus a day of fun, but it’s also a way to give back to the community. A portion of the $10 entry fee per dog will go to the Paws and Claws Adoption Center, helping pets in need find their forever homes. So, while your pup is having the time of their life, you’ll also be contributing to a great cause.

Tips for a Paw-some Puppy Plunge

To ensure your dog has the best possible time, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Check the Water Temperature: Dogs who don’t spend much time in the water can be sensitive to extreme temperatures, so be sure to monitor your pup’s comfort level. Bring along a towel for post-swim drying to keep them cozy.
  2. Bring Fresh Water: While the pool is fun for splashing, it’s important your dog stays hydrated with fresh water throughout the event.
  3. Mind the Chlorine: Although chlorine levels will be reduced for the event, it’s still a good idea to rinse your dog off after their swim to remove any lingering chemicals and keep an eye on any irritations you notice.
  4. Doggy Dress Code: If your pup has a favorite outfit, feel free to bring it along! While costumes aren’t required, they add to the fun and make for great photos.
  5. Socialization Skills: Make sure your dog is comfortable around other dogs. The event is off-leash, so it’s important that all participating pups are well-socialized and ready to play nicely with others.
  6. Pick Up Your Dog’s Poop: With so many dogs enjoying the event, let’s keep the pool and parking areas clean by picking up after your dog. Many children utilize Pawnee Park and waste stations are limited, so please pick up the poop to keep the parks clean and safe for everyone. Be sure to bring waste bags and dispose of them properly.

Poolside Etiquette and What to Expect

The Puppy Plunge is all about having fun, but a little etiquette goes a long way in ensuring everyone has a great time. Here’s what you can expect and how to prepare:

  1. Respect the Pool Rules: Even though this event is all about the dogs, basic pool rules still apply. Make sure your dog is well-behaved and follows commands, especially in an off-leash environment.
  2. Keep It Calm: Not all dogs are experienced swimmers, so it’s important to ease them into the water. Start with shallow areas and let your dog build confidence before venturing deeper.
  3. Be Aware of Other Dogs: Keep an eye on how your dog interacts with others. Some dogs are more playful than others, and it’s important to respect the space and comfort levels of all participants.
  4. Leash Up When Necessary: While dogs can roam free in the pool area, it’s a good idea to keep a leash handy in case your dog needs a break or becomes too excited.
  5. Have Fun, But Stay Safe: The most important rule is to have fun, but always prioritize your dog’s safety. Watch for signs of fatigue or discomfort, and don’t hesitate to take breaks.
